The Human Jesus

Our theology makes much out of the fact that Jesus was God.  The Gospel writer, John, refers to Jesus as the Word that was with God and was God.   All you have to do is look at the depictions of Jesus in art and paintings over the years.  You’ll notice how Jesus is often seen with a halo or a sunburst of light illuminating his head.  It is good and right to honor Jesus as God.  It is central to our belief as Christians.  Yet, there is another side to Jesus – a side often forgotten.  Jesus was also fully human.

The human side of Jesus is on full display this Sunday as we take a look at the Garden of Gethsemane story where we see Jesus struggling with real human emotions, in anguish, distressed, praying fervently, and feeling the pain of his pending horrific death by crucifixion.  It’s a lot to take in.  And, the human side of Jesus is struggling with very real and difficult emotions in his final hours.  What does it mean?  How can Jesus’ example help us embrace our humanity and deal with difficult emotions?

Join us this Sunday, February 4, as God has a word of inspiration for you at Grace Church!  Traditional worship begins at 9:00 AM.  Contemporary worship begins at 10:45 AM.  Both services feature the same biblical message, heart-felt worship, warm friends, and the healing presence of the Holy Spirit in our midst.  We’ll also share the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper at each service.  A nursery is provided for children.  Refreshments will be served between the services.  Newcomers will be welcome!

Our “Resilient” Men’s Retreat also begins tonight (Friday) at 7:00 PM at the Riverview Conference Center in Cedar Falls.  It’s not too late to join us if you like.  Just come and enjoy good food, fellowship, and faith formation through the excellent video teaching of John Eldredge.  The “Women of Joy” Bible study also meets this Saturday at 1:00 PM at our youth house.  All women are invited.  It’s going to be another Spirit-filled weekend at Grace Church.  Join us and refresh your weary soul!
