American Spirituality
Are you old enough to remember the old Burger King commercial of the 70’s? “Hold the pickle, hold the lettuce, special orders don’t upset us. Have it your way!” The famous slogan was: “Have it your way!” That pretty much sums up we Americans, right? We like to have things ‘our way.’ That’s what rugged American individualism is all about. I’ll do things my way; you can do things your way. I’m good on my own. No need for anyone or anything. I’ll figure it out. My world revolves around me.
Unfortunately, this individualistic, self-focused spirit often seeps into our faith. In fact, if we’re not careful, it can even ‘hijack Jesus’ into saying something and standing for things Jesus never said of stood for. Christianity is a group affair. Jesus calls us to walk with him alongside other disciples. The church is a community of God’s people. Together, we are the Body of Christ. Seems this communal aspect of the gospel is sometimes left off from the American brand of Christianity.
If you’re looking for a deeper walk with God and not afraid to consider how American, secular culture has affected your relationship with Jesus, please join us this Sunday. We will continue and conclude our Hijacking Jesus sermon series with the message, “American Individualism.” You’ll be encouraged to leave the cultural and political trappings associated with Jesus behind and discover the true biblical Jesus once again. We’ll consider five ‘cries’ Jesus is making to you personally.
Worship begins at 10:00 AM. The message will be Spirit-filled. Worship will be uplifting. Warm friends will greet you. A nursery space and children’s church are available for children. The refreshment time will be hosted by Ron & Judy Opperman in honor of their 49th wedding anniversary and also Pastor Dave’s birthday which also happens to be this Sunday. It’s going to be a Spirit-filled and refreshing time. Please forward this email, invite your friends, and join us with your loved ones!
