House Cleaning
Are you good at keeping your house clean? Despite my best efforts, I don’t think my living room would pass “the white glove test.” Dust always has a way of finding my furniture and shelving as well as the stuff on it. I used to vacuum and clean my house religiously every single Saturday. That is what mom did, after all. Then, I asked: Why? Hardly anyone sees my house other than me. That’s why it’s good to have company over once in a while. It’s a reason to clean, right? Good thing for company!
Sunday’s passage is about a time Jesus did some “house cleaning.” Not the house you or I live in. But the house of our hearts and the house of the Lord. We love to imagine Jesus as kind, loving, tender, and compassionate. Surely, Jesus is all those things. But this Sunday we’ll see another side to Jesus. This Sunday, we see an angry Jesus overturning tables and chasing people with whips because they had “made a mess” of his house, the Temple. What made Jesus so mad? What does it mean for us today?
