From Small Beginnings

I will never forget my dad reading the Bible at the dinner table when I was a boy.  Every evening after supper, dad picked up his old beat-up King James version of the Bible and read one chapter while my mom, my siblings, and I listened quietly as best we could.  I’m honestly not sure how much of what dad read sank into my heart or how much I remembered the next day.  But I do remember dad reading.  I do remember imitating my dad reading my own Bible at a family gathering.  I do remember becoming a pastor.

Who knows how God uses what seems so small and insignificant to impact people in great ways over time?  Who knows how parents impact their kids?  Who knows how teachers impact their students?  Who knows how Grace Church impacts hundreds, even thousands of people, over the life of our little church?  What started in May of 1949 with just 30 people meeting in the basement of a house on nearby Stratford Avenue continues to be used by God to impact countless people with the love and grace of Jesus!

It’s amazing how God uses small and often hidden acts of love and blessing to shame the mighty and powerful of this world, and to build His Church and expand His Kingdom.  We continue our ‘When Kingdoms Collide’ sermon series this Sunday with the message, “Like a Mustard Seed.”  It’s a message that flies in the face of American values and especially cultural, consumer-oriented Christianity.  I believe you will be both challenged and comforted by this message which will likely be the best one yet in this series.

Traditional worship begins at 9:00 AM.  Contemporary worship begins at 10:45 AM.  Both services feature the same biblical message, heart-felt worship, warm friends, and the renewing presence of the Holy Spirit in our midst.  A nursery is provided for children.  Fellowship time will be held between services hosted by Sheryl Sires and family in honor of 40 years of belonging to Grace Church.  Some special goodies will be provided.  I sincerely hope you and your loved ones will plan to join us.  Let us worship God!
