God of the Impossible
I need to confess to you that I have a problem. My concept of God is often too small. I sometimes limit God’s ability to work in my life with my short-sighted faith. Honestly, I don’t always believe God can do what I ask of Him and pray for. Either I doubt God’s ability to do it. Or, I doubt whether God really desires to do it. In other words, I sometimes lack faith. I tend to confine God to the box of human reasoning, my limited imagination, common sense, or my past experiences. What about you?
Hebrews 11:1 says, “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” The Bible exhorts us to walk by faith and not by sight. Yet, I am human. I want to see things before I trust them or forge ahead on an unclear path. And, this is the crux of the problem for human beings. We often fail to see God for who He is. We fail to see the goodness, bigness, majesty, and mystery of God. We fail to see God as the God of improbabilities and impossibilities. Just ask Abraham and Sarah.
Sunday’s message, “Our Laughable God,” emerges from the story of God’s interaction with Abraham and Sarah in Genesis 18:1-15. God extends a wonderful promise to Abraham and Sarah. And how do they respond? They laugh at God! The promise is incredible. It’s downright ridiculous and humanly impossible. But that’s the point. God is able to do the impossible. We may laugh at God for his incredulous promises. We may laugh at those who trust Him boldly. But it is God who gets the last laugh.
If you, like me, tend to lack faith sometimes, then join us this Sunday, June 18, to be inspired and encouraged. Our combined worship service begins at 10:00 AM featuring a solidly biblical message, heart-felt worship, warm friends, and the renewing presence of the Holy Spirit in our midst. We’ll have the joy of receiving three new members into our church family. (Talk about the God of improbabilities!) Plan to be present Sunday and bring your friends. Refreshing for your soul awaits you at Grace Church!
