Hijacking Jesus
Have you ever heard of airplanes being hijacked? That’s when a person or persons using threats or force demand the pilots take the plane in a direction or to a destination not intended. These kinds of hijackings peaked in 1968 and 1972, with over 305 incidents recorded globally within those five years. Thankfully, they are much less frequent today. But we all still remember the tragic hijackings that took place on September 11, 2001. Hijackings are dangerous and sometimes cost lives.
But now imagine hijacking Jesus. Is that even possible? The truth is: Popular theologies, theories, falsehoods, political posturing, and flat-out heresy have distorted the biblical Jesus, taking him in a direction he did not intend to go. Many of these heresies are subtle and nearly imperceptible sounding religious or even “Christian.” Others are more blatant, claiming Jesus is an American, a Republican, or a Democrat. This form of spiritual hijacking of Jesus is dangerous and can also cost lives.
For nine months now, God has been “birthing” within me a new sermon series entitled, “Hijacking Jesus.” It is my prayer that through this six-week series, we will rediscover the biblical Jesus and learn to fall in love with Christ anew. It’s important we “call out” and discern the lies that are so rampant among us in today’s world. This Sunday, we’ll begin with an introductory message entitled, “The Cultural Jesus.” Please see the attached flyer for more details and come ready to be challenged!
Worship begins at 10:00 AM this Sunday. Our music will be lively and heart-felt. The message will be inspiring. Warm friends will greet you. And the healing presence of the Holy Spirit will be moving in our midst. A nursery space is available along with Busy Bags for infants and toddlers. A Children’s Church will be provided for children 3 years – 2nd grade. And refreshments will be served following the service. Please share this post, invite a friend, and join us this Sunday to be renewed!
