In Deep Water

One of things for which I am grateful is growing up near Lake Michigan and being able to swim there during hot summer days.  A buddy and I would often head-out to the Ottawa Beach State Park on hot summer Sunday afternoons to enjoy the sun, sand, and cool clear waters of this beautiful lake.  I’ve also had the privilege of snorkeling in the Virgin Islands and at Hanauma Bay in Hawaii.  It’s great to be able to cool off and enjoy the beauty of the water and sea life.  Taking a swim sounds good right about now!

But occasionally, I’ve gotten so caught-up in enjoying the array of colorful tropical fish while snorkeling that I didn’t realize how deep the water was.  I had inadvertently swum out past my comfort level and suddenly found myself in deep water.  I panicked a little once I realized how deep the water was!  Perhaps you too have found yourself in “deep water.”  You’re not out swimming, but the circumstances of life – a job, family, finances, health, grief, etc. – have overwhelmed you.  You feel like you are going under!

Sunday’s Scripture lesson from Mark 6:45-52 is about a time when Jesus’ disciples found themselves in deep water also.  They were in a boat in the middle of a lake straining at the oars against a headwind, going nowhere, and fearing for their lives.  Jesus shows up.  And what happens next changes their lives forever.  Are you finding yourself in “deep water” lately?  Is there a situation in your life that threatens to pull you down?  Join us Sunday to discover three things about Jesus that comfort us in our struggles.

Worship begins at 10:00 AM and will feature a blend of hymns and contemporary songs as our “Spirit of Grace” praise band regroups to help lead worship.  A nursery is available for children and Busy Bags are provided for kids who remain in the sanctuary.  I will share a few pictures of my recent vacation in the great Smoky Mountains in connection with the message.  An inspired sermon, lively music, warm friends, and the healing power of the Holy Spirit await you Sunday.  Please join us with an open heart!
