Jesus’ Take on Sin
Do you believe in sin? Many people in today’s world do not. Most would admit to making mistakes. But in a world where many could care less about a God who distinguishes right from wrong, the concept of sin is simply an ancient relic of religious jargon. In fact, to talk about sin only brings up the harmful feelings of guilt and shame. Perhaps it’d be better if we never mention it. You do what you want; I’ll do what I want. Don’t judge me and I won’t judge you. There is no right or wrong. Anything goes!
Those are popular notions. But that’s not what Jesus taught. Rather than minimize, excuse, or avoid the topic of sin, Jesus addressed sin head-on time and time again. In fact, he warned people about the eternal consequences of living in unrepentant sin and avoiding God’s rules for holy living. This Sunday’s passage from Mark 9:42-50 is another one of those times when Jesus warns us about sin. With harsh, vivid, and provocative language, Jesus smokes out the sin in our lives. Do you dare be convicted?
