Places to Avoid
You don’t have to live many years to realize there are certain places in the world you want to avoid. Traveling into nations or territories ruled by dictators, held by terrorists, run by drug cartels, experiencing war, or dominated by sin and lawlessness - is generally not a good idea. You may want to think twice before booking a vacation to Ukraine this summer. If you have a gambling addiction, Las Vegas may not be a good city to visit. Neighborhoods overrun by gangs may not be the best place to take a walk at night.
You get the picture. Some regions of our world, nation, cities, and neighborhoods are not always safe. In Jesus’ day, the region of Gerasenes – a part of the Decapolis – was one of those places. Gerasenes and the larger Decapolis of which is was a part, were pagan areas ruled by godless people. It was dangerous territory and generally avoided by good Jews. Imagine the disciples’ shock, surprise, and apprehension then, when Jesus announces in Mark 4:35: “Let us go over to the other side.” What?!
So too, Jesus is often pushing the envelope of our comfort zones and redefining how and whom we love and minister to as Christians. Sunday’s message, “The Other Side,” will challenge our thinking and outreach by identifying four ‘Good News’ points of Mark 5:1-20. We resume our sermon series When Kingdoms Collide as I return to lead and preach after a fruitful and restful week away. Please join us and bring your family and friends, if you can. Come with an open mind and heart; and see what Jesus will do!
Traditional worship begins at 9:00 AM and features the singing of some of our favorite hymns accompanied by organ and piano. Contemporary worship begins at 10:45 AM and features lively praise music led by our “Spirit of Grace” praise band. Both services feature a solid, biblical message, heart-felt worship, warm friends, and the moving of the Holy Spirit in our midst. A nursery is provided. Refreshments will be served between services for all in our Fellowship Hall. Won’t you join us and discover hope in Jesus?
