Trivial Pursuits
Have you ever heard of the game, Trivial Pursuit? I have never played the game but understand that players compete to answer questions in six major categories that relate to general knowledge, basic history, and popular culture. Many of the questions would be considered trivial knowledge by most people. But the player to answer questions correctly in all the major categories, plus a final question selected by other players wins the game. If you’re good with trivia, you’ll do well with this game.
Did you know Jesus spoke about trivia also? In Mark 8:36, Jesus asks: “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?” In essence, Jesus is saying that all the stuff of this world – all this world offers – is trivial compared to the life of your soul. God created you with a soul. It is of utmost value. The pursuits of the world are trivial compared to the deeper life of your soul. Attend to it, protect it, care for it. What good is it to be the richest person in the world, yet lose your soul?
I don’t know about you, but I spend a lot of time focused on the things of this world. I dedicate time to my job, my appearance, my house, my hobbies, and my wardrobe among other things. I pay bills, do laundry, clean the house, and do outdoor chores most every week. But how much time do I dedicate to caring for that which is most valuable - my soul? Jesus teaches us that true life is not found in the things of this world, but in the life of the soul. This week, we’ll discover how to cultivate this life.
Join us for worship Sunday, November 6 as we host a traditional service at 9:00 AM and a contemporary service at 10:45 AM. The former includes the singing of hymns; the latter includes the singing of praise songs. Both include the same inspiring message from God’s Word and the power of the Holy Spirit moving in our midst. It’s going to be another great day of worship and healing at Grace Church. I sincerely look forward to welcoming you, your loved ones, and your friends into our worship & family!
